Ten automakers have vowed to make automatic emergency braking standard on their vehicles. The list of those automakers can be found here http://www.motortrend.com/news/1509_10_automakers_to_make_automatic_emergency_braking_standard/.

Most brands offer this technology or a technology similar as an optional feature. Automatic braking is exactly what it sounds like. Your vehicle can sense an accident that might be imminent and apply some or full braking power to prevent or lessen the force of impact. I for one am very happy to hear that this technology will be made standard on vehicles at some point because it really islife saving technology. I had it on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I remember one specific instance in Galveston where it saved my bacon. Most systems will give you a warning either visual, audible, or vibrate your seat to give you a warning. That is your signal to step in and apply the brakes or steer in a different direction. If you provide no input, the car takes full control and brings you to a halt. Some brands take it a step further and the cars will adjust seats, close windows, and even play a sound to protect your hearing to prepare for an impact if it does happen.

The naysayers say people need to pay attention and drive without all of the nannies. I get it. I really do. However, we are all sometimes distracted and an extra set of “eyes” in the car can really come in handy and save you. What do you think about automakers making this technology standard?
